The 'Kiel Model' goes national: digital birth notification live and spreading

The “Kiel Model” is live. The first digital birth notifications have been transmitted machine-to-machine and received by the civil registry office — ending a process that relied on paper for nearly 150 years.

Vertama provided the technical infrastructure enabling this end-to-end M2M process, delivered jointly with Städtisches Krankenhaus Kiel (SKK) and Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH). Notifications are transmitted directly from the hospital information system to the registry office, with no manual handoff.

Rolling out nationally

Klinikum Region Hannover has already adopted the process. Further regions have expressed interest. The result validates Vertama’s approach: an open, KIS-agnostic solution that scales beyond any single hospital or region.

Vertama’s DiGG product provides the technical foundation: XPersonenstand standard, OSCI infrastructure, seamless KIS integration. The source article is in German.
