The Kiel Model Is on Everyone's Lips
The Kiel model is not only a great example of end-to-end digitization of administrative processes; it is also touted by key players within the administration as a driver of efficiency.

𝟏𝟓𝟎 years of paper. Now just one click. ✔️
For nearly 150 years, birth registration has been handled on paper. Forms, faxes, manual data entry. For each of the 700,000 births per year in Germany. Every single time. That’s now a thing of the past.
In Kiel and Hanover, birth registration is now fully automated: A midwife or hospital staff member enters the data into the hospital information system, and with the push of a button, the report is sent to the relevant registry office—legally compliant, machine-readable, and complete.
❌️ No paper. No scan. No manual editing.
The result: a time savings of 7.5 person-days per month at the Kiel Registry Office alone. Faster birth certificates for parents. And a noticeable reduction in the workload for hospital staff.
And best of all: Most hospitals in Germany could implement the solution immediately. The registry offices are ready. Now it just needs to be put to use.
The “Kiel Model” is leading the way, and other municipalities and states are already on board.
The infrastructure is in place. The standards have been set. The practical test has been passed.
