Product Launch: DIVI with Dräger ICM
Relieving the burden on clinical and administrative hospital staff – daily reporting of intensive care capacity is now automated through digital workflows.
Significant efficiency gains – With the Vertama product DIVI and real-time data from the Dräger Integrated Care Manager (ICM), the reporting of intensive care unit (ICU) capacities can be handled as an automated, end-to-end process, transmitting data directly to the Robert Koch Institute.
Berlin, July 23, 2026 – Hospitals are legally required to submit daily reports on their intensive care capacity to the DIVI Intensive Care Registry; these reports must reach the Robert Koch Institute no later than 12:00 noon. The essential information includes the number of operational and occupied ICU beds, ventilation status, and—particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic—additional patient-related data. The Intensive Care Registry uses this information to generate nationwide maps, tables, and charts, which play a pivotal role in infection control and enable data-driven management of medical care.
However, for many hospitals, the reporting process remains arduous. Without automation, the day often begins in a state of frenzy: it might be a Sunday morning, the ICU is at full capacity, and a constant stream of new admissions and emergencies continues. While simultaneously attending to patients, the physician on duty or the coordinating nurse must compile current occupancy figures. Since each ICU is considered an individual reporting unit, large hospitals with multiple ICUs often face a complex workflow involving phone calls, consultations, list updates, and the correction of documentation errors. Finally, the staff responsible must log into the Intensive Care Registry’s web portal, manually enter the data, verify its plausibility, and submit the report. Especially during periods of high strain, this process leads to delays, stress, and—in the worst-case scenario—missing or erroneous reports, even though the data is of significant importance for public healthcare.
This is precisely where the automated solution from Vertama, developed in collaboration with Dräger, comes into play. The software is capable of automatically identifying and processing all required metrics from intensive care units (ICUs) and reporting them to the Intensive Care Registry via an API interface—entirely without the need for manual intervention. Data such as ventilation status, bed occupancy and availability, operational capacity, and other relevant attributes are continuously retrieved from Dräger’s patient data management system (PDMS) and validated using predefined logic. The software aggregates this data, generates the correct reporting format, and automatically transmits the information at a scheduled time.
For hospital staff, this represents a fundamental shift in their daily routine. Previously, a physician might have had to quickly check and manually enter these figures on a Sunday morning, perhaps even between two emergency cases; today, that same process runs invisibly in the background. The system generates and sends the report, creates an audit-proof record in the archive, and provides a dashboard that displays the current status along with options for manual adjustments, if necessary. Staff members now only need to oversee the process rather than execute it themselves.
This transforms what was once a complex, time-consuming, and error-prone task into a reliable, fully automated workflow. Data becomes available for infection control efforts more quickly, more comprehensively, and with higher quality—all while significantly easing the burden on hospitals, allowing staff to focus on what truly matters during high-pressure moments: patient care.
All relevant data is available in real time, displayed on the DIVI dashboard, and can be transmitted end-to-end directly to the target system at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).
The data for further use is provided by Dräger’s Integrated Care Manager (ICM). Matthias Heinrich, Marketing Manager for Hospital IT Systems at Dräger, describes the role of the ICM: “Among Dräger’s innovative solutions is the Integrated Care Manager, one of the market-leading clinical information systems. The ICM supports patient data management and the recording of services in anesthesia, intensive care units, and neonatology. Through integration with Vertama’s products, this data is made available for mandatory statutory reporting to the DIVI Intensive Care Registry. In this way, the ICM allows Dräger to play a decisive role in advancing the digital transformation of clinical workflows and easing the burden on hospital staff.”
“Following the success of our ELIM and BELIM products, we aimed to achieve a state of automated, end-to-end digitalization for reporting to the Intensive Care Registry as well. To do this, we can integrate our product into the primary systems used in intensive care—such as Hospital Information Systems (HIS) or Patient Data Management Systems (PDMS)—and fully automate the process,” explains Vertama CEO Andre Sturm, describing his strategy. “Especially when it comes to recurring daily statutory reporting requirements, we must leverage existing capabilities and use convenient, secure solutions to minimize the effort spent on tedious bureaucracy.”
